- W2268522731 abstract "The attenuation of a neutron flux in Fe was examined by using an approximation theory which satisfies the experimental data. The flux density and the neutron energy spectrum were determined by solving the kinetic equation for a monodirectional neutron flux which is perpendicularly incident on a semi-infinite absorber with respect to the boundary. The angilar deviation of the neutrons during their interaction with the nuclei was not taken into account; as a result of this, insufficient data were obtained concerning the space-energy distribution of the secondary particles for the case of the interaction of high-energy nucleons with the nuclei. Passage of the neutrons through the shield is defined by the most energetic component of the spectrum, deflected at small angles. The differential emission of cascade protons at E/sub p/ = 460 Mev was measured by using the derived equations. Determination of the dependence of the neutron flux formed by the bombardment of a Be target with 660-Mev protons on the thickness of a steel or iron shield showed that at thicknesses larger than 20 cm the theoretical and experimental data agree quite well; the theoretical andd experimental half-value attenuations, DELTA /sub 1/2/,were 15.9 plus or minus 0.6 and 16.5 plusmore » or minus 1.3 cm, respectively.
