- W2268843721 abstract "In seeking to ascribe sin as a universal human condition, in an age wary of any universalism, the doctrine of original sin abrades against modernity’s unwavering faith in its ability to create itself ex nihilo, and the sense of innocence from which this faith emerges. It’s for this reason that Soren Kierkegaard devoted his 1844 work, The Concept of Anxiety, to this very doctrine, plumbing its depths for the full significance of Christian responsibility. In it, he saw a corrective to a modern sensibility enamored of its own innocence and consequently engrossed in irresponsibility, at the expense of self-reflective depth. Simultaneously, but miles away, Karl Marx toiled over the very same idea. Arriving at a concept of irresponsibility closely paralleling that of Kierkegaard, the idea of original sin pervades how Marx understood bourgeois class consciousness. While this modern iteration of original sin might seem a return to the repressive ideology of feudalism, both Kierkegaard and Marx saw in it tremendous power as a social critique and also as a doctrine of radical liberation. In characterizing transgression as sin, human self-development left behind an incremental teleology in favor of the radical possibility presented by a transcendental doctrine. Marx and Kierkegaard simultaneously recognized the depth to which human irresponsibility had sunk, and the radical emancipatory potential involved in accepting this." @default.
