• W2269287985 abstract "Cosmopolitanism has a high standing in normative debates, but its empirical existence is contested and it is not yet well understood what influences its development. In contrast, a transnational status is empirically on the rise but normatively contested. One might assume that conceived as different elements of new forms of citizenship beyond the (single) nation state these phenomena are closely connected. Does an either full (dual citizens) or partial (foreign residents) transnational status has an impact on cosmopolitanism? This paper first offers a conceptual discussion of cosmopolitanism by disentangling its multidimensional character from a perspective based on major democratic theories: liberalism, republicanism, and communitarianism. We expect that a transnational status has a positive impact on liberal and communitarian cosmopolitanism, but only its full version, i.e. dual citizenship, increases republican cosmopolitanism. The empirical analysis is based on an original and comparative survey conducted among mono citizens, dual citizens and foreign residents in Switzerland. Factor and multivariate regression analyses reveal that controlling for other influences a transnational status has a differentiated impact on the different dimensions of cosmopolitanism: dual citizens are indeed more likely to manifest republican cosmopolitanism, but only foreign residents are more likely to manifest liberal and communitarian cosmopolitanism. Thus, while having the full set of political rights and opportunities in two countries seems relevant for republican cosmopolitanism, being excluded from the political community of residence seems relevant for the other two dimensions." @default.
