Key words: english, textbook, evaluation, senior high school The goal of the study is to review how the Interlanguage: English for Senior High School Students XI meets the criteria of a good communicative textbook based on 8 main categories, i.e. relevancy to the 2006 Standards of Content, language content and skills, communicative aspects, authenticity, quality of practice materials, sequence-recycle-staging, technicalities, and suitability to students' interest and needs. The researcher utilized descriptive-evaluative or content/document analysis as the design of the study. Analysis sheet and students'questionnaires were the main instruments used. The analysis sheet was extracted from criteria mentioned on the reference sheet extracted from Board of Standards of National Education (Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan/BSNP) and suggested by Ur (1999), Cunningsworth (1995), Nunan (2003), Reiss (2005), and Harmer (2007). The analysis sheet was used to judge the textbook quality. It was filled by 3 evaluators, i.e. the researcher as the main evaluator and two teachers of private Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic Senior High School) as peer evaluators. The questionnaire was used to see the students' responses toward the materials and tasks. The fulfillment of the criteria was taken from Sukriawati (2008) and Fathurrahman (2004) which was qualified in very good (85%-100%), good (65%-84%), fair (55%-64%), poor (40%-54%) and very poor (0%-39%). The results of evaluation show that the relevancy to the 2006 Standards of Content is categorized as good, language content and skills are very good, communicative aspects are good, authenticity is very poor, quality of practice materials is very good, sequence-recycle-staging is fair, technicalities is fair, and suitability is good as it accommodates the students' interest and needs. Interlanguage textbook is not a good communicative textbook and unrecommended for users who rely on using one book. It neglected the primary and indispensable criterion, i.e. relevancy to the curriculum and does not fulfill all criteria being evaluated. Some suggestions are proposed. First goes to the teachers who rely on using one book, they should omit it. Meanwhile, to teachers who still want to use it as an alternative textbook; they should change it by adding, rewriting, re-ordering, or reducing the materials and tasks. The second goes to the book writers; they should complete the materials, provide listening CD/cassette, interesting activities, authentic dialogue and texts, and promote creative activities.Next goes to the BSNP and government; they should make the evaluation criteria in detail, show transparent result of evaluation, and do revision toward the textbook. Kata kunci: bahasa inggris, buku teks, evaluasi, SMU Penelitian ini brtujuan untuk mereview bagaimana buku teks English for Senior High School Students XI memenuhi kriteria sebuah buku teks komunikatif yang baik. Tujuan ini dipecah menjadi 8 kategori: relevansi terhadap Standar Isi 2006, konten bahasa dan skill, aspek komunikatif, authentisitas, kualitas materi praktis, urutan-pengulangan-distribusi materi, teknikalitas, dan kesesuaiannya terhadap ketertarikan dan kebutuhan siswa. Desain penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif evaluatif atau analisis isi. Lembar analisa dan kuisioner siswa merupakan instrumen utama yang digunakan. Lembar analisa mengacu pada kriteria pedoman yang diambil dari kriteria BSNP (Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan) yang dilengkapi dengan kriteria yang bersumber dari Ur (1999), Cunningsworth (1995), Nunan (2003), Reiss (2005), dan Harmer (2007). Lembar analisa digunakan untuk menilai kualitas buku. Lembar analisa ini diisi oleh 3 evaluator, yaitu peneliti sebagai evaluator utama dan 2 guru dari Madrasah Aliyah swasta yang berfungsi sebagai evaluator sejawat. Kuisioner digunakan untuk mengetahui pendapat siswa terhadap buku teks. Pemenuhan kriteria diambil dari Sukriawati (2008), dan Fathurrahman (2004), yang digolongkan menjadi sangat baik (85%-100%), baik (65%-84%), cukup (55%-64%), buruk (40%-54%) dan sangat buruk (0%-39%). Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa relefansi terhadap Standar Isi 2006 adalah baik, isi bahasa dan skill sangat baik, aspek komunikatif baik, authentisitas sangat kurang, kualitas materi praktis sangat baik, urutan-pengulangan-distribusi materi-di cukup, teknikalitas cukup, dan kesesuaian terhadap siswa dikategorikan baik karena mengakomodasi ketertarikan dan kebutuhan siswa. Buku Interlanguage bukan buku yang baik dan tidak direkomendasikan kepada pengguna yang hanya menggunakan satu buku, karena buku ini mengabaikan kriteria utama yang sangat penting yaitu relefansi terhadap kurikulum dan buku ini tidak memenuhi semua kriteria yang dievalusi. Ada beberapa saran yang diajukan. Pertama, kepada guru yang mengacu hanya pada satu buku, mereka sebaiknya mengabaikan buku ini. Sedangkan kepada guru yang masih ingin tetap menggunakan buku ini sebagai alternatif, mereka sebaiknya melakukan perubahan dengan cara menambah, menulis kembali, menyusun ulang, atau mengurangi materi dan tugas. Kedua, kepada penulis buku hendaknya melengkapi materi yang kurang, menyediakan CD/kaset listening, kegiatan yang menarik, dialog dan teks yang otentik, dan menambah aktifitas yang kreatif.
