• W2269695384 abstract "A preintroductory study of the efficacy side effects and use of the Norplant contraceptive implant system was conducted in 3 public family planning centers in Santiago and 3 elsewhere in Chile. 1679 women aged 18-40 years not desiring pregnancy within the next 12 months entered the study between September 1985-June 1988. 2 women were excluded because they were later found to have been pregnant at the time of insertion. 1 had an ectopic pregnancy and the other delivered a normal infant. The 1979 women accumulated 19703 months of use and had a total of 8273 follow-up visits corresponding to an average of 4.9 visits and 11.8 months of observation. The average age of acceptors was 28 years and the average parity was 2.2. 2% were nulliparas. Average weight was 56.5 kg. 34% reported previously using IUDs 46% pills 8% injectables 3% barrier methods and 5% no method. Rates of loss to follow-were low amounting to 4.5% in the 1st year and 6.9% at 24 months. No changes were observed in average weight or blood pressure during control visits. 1.1% of users gained more than 6 k. 3 women (.2%) had blood pressure increases to over 140/100 which led to removal of the implants as required by the study protocol. 524 of the 1679 acceptors (31.2%) reported no side effects at any control visit. Menstrual disturbances were the most frequently reported side effect mentioned in 36.4% of follow-up visits. Prolonged bleeding was reported in 12.6% amenorrhea in 8.4% spotting in 8.3% and excessive volume of bleeding in 6.2%. Headaches were reported in 11.2% of visits other problems in 8.8% pelvic pain in 5.0% dizziness in 4.2% weight changes in 3.6% changes in temperament in 3.4% disturbances at the implant site in 2.4% nausea in 2.1% and alterations in libido in 1.1%. 246 of the 1679 acceptors terminated use in the 34 months of follow-up. There were 6 pregnancies all occurring in the 2nd year among women using implants from a single lot which was used in 22.7% of all insertions. 1 pregnancy was ectopic and the others were developing normally. At time of publication. 3 normal infants had been born. The cumulative pregnancy rate was 0.0 at 12 months and .5 at 24 months. The Pearl index was 0 at 12 months and .36 pregnancies per 100 woman-months of use at 24 months. 64 women terminated use because of menstrual problems 92 for a variety of other medical problems not necessarily related directly to the method 40 because of desire for pregnancy 33 for personal reasons such as moving out of the study area or no longer requiring contraception and 11 because of expulsion or infection. Cumulative continuation rates were 92.4 and 78.7 after 1 and 2 years. The method appears to be safe and effective when administered by trained personnel." @default.
