- W2270243463 abstract "The Department of Water uses future climate scenarios to inform water planning in the south-west of Western Australia. This is essential given that rainfall has been declining since the 1970s, and all global climate models (GCMs) for the region project a drier future. To ensure that use of future scenarios is consistent, the department has developed a standard range of climate projections for the state and specified how to use the projections to manage water availability - now and for the future. The projections can be readily used as an input to the department's ground and surface water models. Previous studies including Climate Change in Australia (CSIRO and BoM, 2007), and South-west WA Sustainable Yields (CSIRO, 2009a, 2009b) produced climate projections at national and regional scales, but were limited in their capacity to provide the variable sets required by the Department of Water. A standard set of climate projections were developed for five separate regions throughout the state, using GCMs that demonstrate higher skill in modelling WA's climate, and these were packaged into a future climate tool. Within each region, the results from multiple GCMs and emissions scenarios were ranked based on the projected regional rainfall anomaly in 2100. The 10th, 50th and 90th percentile ranked scenarios were used to select a relative hotter / drier, median, and cooler / wetter scenario. Gridded monthly anomalies were calculated at 2030, 2050, 2070 and 2100 relative to a 1961 to 1990 baseline, for the following variables: maximum, minimum and mean temperature, relative humidity, net incoming radiation, precipitation, derived potential evapotranspiration (FAO56 Penman-Monteith), and evaporation from open water (Penman). Using monthly scaling, the gridded climate anomalies can be used to modify baseline data anywhere in the state." @default.
