- W2271108666 abstract "The demand for mass transit in metropolitan areas is on the rise, especially with recent elevations in fuel costs. As a result, there needs to be increased scrutiny on how these transit systems will impact public health. The objective of this research is to determine 1) how the air quality inside transit vehicles compares to that of ambient and private vehicle conditions in the summer and winter periods in Birmingham, Alabama, and 2) why ozone concentrations are particularly different between buses and automobiles (i.e., much lower for automobiles). The data was collected on approximately 60 rides (transit and private vehicles), beginning in the summer of 2007 and the winter of 2008. The experimental findings were mixed; while PM2.5 exposure was higher in the transit vehicles, some pollutants, such as carbon monoxide (CO), were higher for private commuters. As for ozone, the experiments performed showed some interactions, which could possibly explain the differences observed in ozone concentrations between automobiles and buses.
