- W227111946 abstract "The rate of corrosion of a metal depends on the electrochemical potential of the solution which is determined by the rtature of the oxidation- reduction reactions in the system. The corrosion of 18-8 stainless steel in boiling HNO/sub 3/ solutions (8 to 14 M) is due to the break-down of the passive oxide film and dissolution of a higher oxide film which is soluble. The dissolution process is cathodically controlled. The corrosion rate increases sharply in weak HNO/sub 3/ during contact with an electronegative element (contact with platinum in boiling 12 N HNO/sub 3/ increases the corrosion rate of 18-8 stainless steel by a factor of 50). Monel metal is resistant to corrosion by HF solutions. The vapor-phase corrosion rate of Monel metal above a HF solution is an order of magnitude higher than the corrosion rate of Monel below the surface of a HF solution. The corrosion of Monel metal takes place by oxygen depolarization and is cathodically controlled. Corrosion of Monel metal is by intergranular penetration. The addition of small amounts of fluorides to HNO/sub 3/ solutions increases the corrosion rate of stainless steel due to the dissolution of the passivating film by HF. The addition of Al/supmore » 3+/ or zirconium decreases the corrosion of stainless steel, because Al/sup 3+/ and zirconium form strong complexes and thus remove free HF from the HNO/sub 3/ solution. The corrosion rate of a stainless steel containing 23% Cr and 27% Ni in boiling 4 to 6 M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ can be reduced by providing cathodic protection or by adding 0.2 g/l of Fe/sup 3+/ ion as a protective oxidizing agent.
