• W2271146187 abstract "This chapter focuses on etiology and pathogenesis of mouse leukemia. Mouse leukemia is not a single neoplastic entity. Leukemia occurs spontaneously in certain inbred strains of mice but can be induced in other strains by certain agents—namely, estrogens, carcinogenic hydrocarbons, ionizing radiations, and viruses. Genetic susceptibility to the development of leukemia has been established from long, tedious studies that were reviewed. In crosses between high- and low-leukemic strains, a specific maternal effect has been observed—F, hybrids from high-leukemic mothers showed a higher incidence of leukemia than F, hybrids from low-leukemic mothers of certain strains. This maternal effect was shown not to be a positive influence contributed by the high-leukemic mother but a definite specific resistance factor contributed by the low-leukemic mother. Leukemia is rare in young, immature mice. It is a disease of adult life, increasing in frequency with age. Calorie restriction is profoundly inhibitory for the genesis of a wide range of tumors, both spontaneous and induced. A number of endocrine factors may augment or inhibit the development of murine lymphomas, whether spontaneous or induced by leukemogenic agents. The thymus plays a central role in the etiology and pathogenesis of murine lymphocytic leukemia. The chapter also discusses hematopoietic factors and immunogenetic factors. While some investigators regard alteration in the chromosome complement of cells as a phenomenon of primary etiological significance in the origin and progression of neoplastic growth, others consider such karyotypic alteration as a separate event that is not responsible for the malignant change. The chapter also discusses Leukemogenesis by carcinogenic hydrocarbons. Many strains of mice develop leukemia in response to ionizing radiations. A viral etiology of leukemia would, at first sight, imply natural infectiousness. Leukemia is, however, not an infectious disease in mice." @default.
