- W2271304753 abstract "'Motivating this writing, I suppose, is a fear of going crazy' - with this prefatory admission, Georges Bataille confirms that his engagement with Nietzsche will not conform to the conventions of philosophical writing. To write about Nietzsche in the shadow of European fascism is, for Bataille, an exercise in horror and anguish. In this essay, I argue that Batailleﾒs work on Nietzsche constitutes among the most significant, albeit underappreciated, reflections on the art of political theoretical writing in the twentieth century; significant for its attempt at a reinterpretation of Nietzsche after the fascist (mis)appropriation of his thought, underappreciated as a result of the experiments in form and style that such reinterpretation demands. I look specifically at Bataille's reformulation of the 'will to power' as 'will to chance' and how writing about Nietzsche in the mid-twentieth century amounts to a tortured expression of this will to chance. Finally, I argue that his writings on Nietzsche throw some light on the political stakes and implications of Bataille's 'anti-philosophical' mode of philosophical writing. A fresh look at Bataille's Nietzsche clarifies the worldly concerns that animate his more mystical writings from the same period, especially Inner Experience." @default.
