- W2271809462 abstract "Comprehensive flood mitigation schemes have been constructed on a number of coastal floodplains in New South Wales since the 1950s. The schemes included works such as floodgates, levees, drains and floodways which were considered necessary to alleviate flooding and risk to human life in both urban and rural areas following large flood events in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Until recently schemes, especially in populated urban areas, were built to protect property with little consideration given to impacts on the environment. AS a result of a large flood event in August 1949 (>1% AEP), a substantial scheme was constructed on the lower Macleay floodplain near Kempsey on the New South Wales' mid north coast. The scheme not only served to protect urban areas from flood events, but excluded floodwaters from low lying land (often wetlands) to increase the agricultural productivity. Recent studies undertaken in this area aimed to assess the interactions between hydrology and the environment, in particular focussing on the environmental-impacts of the scheme. Investigations comprising a review of historical information together / with community consultation and assessment of current environmental conditions identified the impacts of an altered hydrological regime on the environment. The scheme and resulting hydrological impacts affect: natural wetlands due to artificially induced dry periods; wetland vegetation species composition; exposure of acid sulfate soils and export of acid (pH < 2) into receiving waters; mobilisation of iron and aluminium ions; higher incidence of fish kills; and migration of aquatic species. This paper identifies and assesses the impacts of an altered hydrologi6al regime on the environment. It investigates options for rehabilitating areas affected by the scheme, especially wetlands, thereby reducing the incidence of acidic discharges from acid sulfate soils and improving fish passage without compromising the level of flood protection provided. Opportunities for rehabilitation have been developed through involvement of the community, local and state government to ensure that environmental, social and economic factors are considered." @default.
