- W2271929057 abstract "The Spanish 'locational' adverb system consists of five terms: aqui, aca, alli, alla and ahi. These are traditionally divided into two sets, those ending in i and those ending in a. The difference between these two sets is not well understood, though it is generally proposed that the i-series indicates location or precise location, while the a-series indicates movement or approximate location (Butt and Benjamin 2000, Sacks 1987, Sedano 1994, Terrado Pablo 1990).In this paper, we present an analysis of the use of these terms in a corpus of 100,000 words (approximately 10 hours) of conversational Colombian Spanish, which presents a total of 1,000 tokens of the adverbs. We demonstrate that these terms cannot be divided neatly into two sets, as the two proposed sets do not behave homogeneously, and we propose that the meanings that have been attributed to the adverbs derive not from the adverbs alone, but from the constructions they enter into. For example, aqui is often used as a general locative in expressions such as este aqui / aqui hay, giving rise to the interpretation of 'location' or 'precise location'. Aca and alla often occur in the collocations para aca / alla and por aca / alla, and hence their association with motion and approximate location. Alli, on the other hand, is used rarely (just 42 times in the corpus), such that no clear patterns emerge, as it appears to be being taken over by ahi, the overwhelmingly most frequent adverb, occurring close to 400 times. Ahi is, however, extending its meaning well beyond the spatial system: just 60% of its uses represent a spatial sense, and in such cases, it tends to express a general locative notion (rather than mid-distance, as is generally proposed). It enters into a range of set constructions, including por ahi as an approximative; ahi mismo in both a locative and temporal sense; ahi si and ahi esta as emphatic agreement markers; and so on.In sum, it is shown that these adverbs do not form a neat paradigm as they develop in different ways, in accordance with the constructions in which they most frequently occur, and that they can most fruitfully be examined from a usage-based perspective (Bybee 2006)." @default.
