- W2272786345 abstract "In many engineering environments corrosion and wear mechanisms act simultaneously. In some cases corrosion and wear may act synergistically producing a more rapid degradation rate than for corrosion and wear processes acting alone. Coatings have been used to improve the resistance of samples to wear or corrosion. However, coatings that improve both the corrosion and wear resistance are uncommon. High nitrogen content AISI 316L (s-phase) coatings on AJSI 316L stainless steel produced by unbalanced magnetron sputter deposition have shown improvements in the corrosion and wear resistance compared with uncoated AISI 316L. To assess the corrosive wear behavior of coated and uncoated AISI 316L a novel corrosion wear testing device was developed in which mechanical wear and a corrosive environment could be applied simultaneously. S-phase coated samples showed a 60% reduction in the rate of total material loss compared with uncoated AISI 316L samples during corrosive wear testing in 0.5M sulphuric acid. Material degradation mechanisms were altered from plastic deformation and abrasive wear in uncoated 316L specimens to abrasive wear only in s-phase coated specimens." @default.
