- W2273219231 abstract "I present a design time methodology for analyzing the temporal behavior of a parallel object oriented application such that the results can be used during development to make implementation decisions that affect the runtime performance of the application. The methodology presented in this thesis allows a programmer and/or parallelizing compiler to explore what if questions about development issues without the need to fully implement the different alternatives. By understanding the temporal behavior of an application on a given multiprocessor and/or execution model, system developers can produce better-performing applications. As a proof of concept for this methodology, I have implemented two tools, OOTAS and Wood. The Object Oriented Temporal Analysis System, or OOTAS, is a system based on Milner's CCS for the exploration of the temporal behavior of parallel applications written using object oriented technologies. Wood is a parallelizing compiler that is used to automate the analysis process and provides the execution environment that is used in testing the viability of this analysis.Together, these systems provide the means for a programmer to answer what if questions about the development and deployment of an application before an actual implementation is undertaken. In OOTAS, the behavior of an application is determined by representing it in TCCS, which is then simulated to determine the temporal properties. OOTAS, therefore, consists of a set of equations in canonical form and the process for modeling and simulating an application. The equations are presented canonical form so that almost any parallel object oriented application can be modeled. These equations allow the user to take into consideration not only the structure of the application but also the runtime environment in which the application runs. Because applications and multiprocessors have many different characteristics, the system is general enough to allow the user to extend it in three different manners in order to accommodate almost any runtime characteristic." @default.
