- W2273516617 abstract "This thesis discusses the representation ofadolescents in Frank Wedekind’s controversial SpringAwakening and in two twenty-first century adaptations ofWedekind’s play: Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s musicalSpring Awakening and Thomas Kilroy’sChrist Deliver Us!. Although some scholars havewritten about Wedekind’s Spring Awakening, andreviewers have discussed Sater and Sheik’s musical and Kilroy’splay, there is no scholarly writing analyzing the teenagecharacters in these plays in the context of the historical timeperiod in which each piece was written and first performed. Thisthesis will attempt to fill this gap in scholarship. Chapter onewill examine Frank Wedekind’s play, paying particular attention tocharacters’ gender performance. This chapter will also look atWedekind’s final scene as an example of liminal space, and willanalyze Wedekind’s representations of adolescent gender and accessto liminal space in the context of the nineteenth century Germanschool system and gender norms. Chapter two will look at Sater andSheik’s musical, especially the expression of gender and liminalitythrough musical numbers, focusing not only on Sater’s lyrics andSheik’s music, but also on Bill T. Jones’s choreography. Thischapter will pay special attention to the clash betweenhyper-sexual culture and the push for abstinence-only education inthe twenty-first century United States, and how this conflict mayhave influenced Sater and Sheik’s adaptation. Chapter three willdiscuss Thomas Kilroy’s Christ Deliver Us!, theonly piece not set in 1890s Germany. This chapter will look atgender and liminality in Kilroy’s play in the context of Irishsocietal norms. It will also focus especially on the influence ofthe Catholic Church in Ireland as well as the Ryan and Murphyreports, released in 2009, that revealed endemic abuse perpetratedby clergy members against children. The conclusion will examine theshared goals of all three pieces, as well as the commonshortcomings of these plays." @default.
