- W2273632768 abstract "The use of liming to reduce the natural acidity of forests soils was recommended in Germany already at the end of the last century. A number of liming experiments were also carried out in Finland and Sweden at the beginning of this century in an attempt to speed up mineralisation of the considerable reserves of organic nitrogen in the humus layer, and thus improve the supply of nitrogen for tree growth (Viro 1962, Tamm 1974). Interest in liming was also stimulated by the finding that the calcium concentrations in the mineral soil are closely associated with site fertility (Valmari 1921). Liming was subsequently included as one of the treatments in an extensive series of long-term fertilisation experiments established by the Finnish Forest Research Institute at the beginning of the 1960’s. Attention has recently turned to the use of liming as a means of alleviating soil acidification caused by the deposition of acidifying pollutants. In Central Europe forest liming is being used on a practical scale to treat forests suffering from nutrient imbalances and soil acidification, and in southern Sweden an extensive forest liming programme is currently underway (Staaf et al. 1996)." @default.
