- W2273839780 abstract "The National English Literary Museum started life in 1972 as a collection of manuscripts known as the Thomas Pringle Collection. This was housed at Rhodes University where it was diligently and lovingly tended by, amongst others, the late Guy Butler. By 1974 the collection had acquired a life of its own, had expanded to include all original and imaginative writing in English by South Africans and was renamed the National English Documentation Centre, still housed on Rhodes Campus but now separately funded by grants from the Human Sciences Research Council. Following the 1975 recommendations by the Niemand Commission it changed its name to National English Literary Museum and in 1980 was gazetted a Declared Cultural Institution. As such it is funded by the National Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology from about the time the Museum moved to its present premises. As I'm addressing museologists there is no need to list the value and eminence of the holdings of NELM, nor of the use made of its collections and services in both local and foreign academic and publishing circles." @default.
