- W227411212 abstract "Replacement of the normal input (cholinergic) to the lumbar (L4) sympathetic chain ganglia with the splenic nerve (adrenergic) results in a successful reinnervation in approximately 70% of the preparations. On the basis of the neurotransmitter released during stimulation, these functioning reinnervated ganglia can be classified into two groups. Those termed adrenergic released norepinephrine and dopamine-β-hydroxylase and dopamine, while those defined as cholinergic did not release any of these three compounds; in this way the cholinergic ganglia were similar to normal control ganglia which also failed to release any of these compounds. These classifications were further substantiated by testing these ganglia with pharmacological agents known to alter the synaptic response. Acetylcholine and curare both had the predicted effects on the cholinergic ganglia. Acetylcholine had a dual action, initially a facilitation of the synaptic response followed by inhibition, while curare blocked the evoked synaptic potential. These compounds were unable to alter the response in the adrenergic ganglia. Similarly, Dibenamine was without effect on the synaptic response of the adrenergic ganglia. These data support the contention of the de novo formation of a noradrenergic synapse in place of the normal cholinergic synapse and also suggest that the postganglionic receptor site has been altered by the novel neuronal input." @default.
