- W2274604443 abstract "Metal-matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with ceramic microparticles find attractive application as structural materials in industrial sectors due to high mechanical strength and elastic modulus as well as excellent high-temperature performance compared with unreinforced alloys. Accordingly, extensive studies have been conducted on the tensile, creep, and fatigue properties of MMCs in the past three decades. However, ceramic reinforcing microparticles often fracture into fragments when subjected to static or dynamic mechanical stresses, leading to failure of MMCs. Recent advances in nanotechnology have opened new opportunities of developing nanometals and nanocomposites with superior mechanical strength. Ceramic and carbonaceous nanomaterials have been used increasingly by materials engineers to reinforce metals and alloys for fabricating nanocomposites recently. Nanometals with grain sizes below a critical value have been found to exhibit unique mechanical characteristics, including inverse Hall–Petch effect and the activation of grain-boundary-mediated deformation mechanisms. Understanding mechanical behavior of nanometals is crucial in the design of high-performance metal matrix nanocomposites for industrial applications. Nowadays, the underlying mechanisms operating in the nanocomposites during mechanical loading remain unclear and poorly understood. This article provides a state-of-the-art review on the creep and fatigue deformation characteristics as well as the failure mechanisms of discontinuously reinforced Al- and Ti-based MMCs from micro- to nanometer scale." @default.
