- W2275334491 abstract "Preventing disability in a context of population ageing is one of the important roles of public health. The main objective of this study was to investigate disability among aged individuals living in community. The study was conducted by means of two researches. The objectives of the first research were to determine the prevalence and the associated factors to disability among elderly in the Metropolitan Area of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The theoretical model was based on predisposing (socio-demographic), extra-individual (social support, use of health services), and intraindividual factors (health conditions). 1.786 aged individuals (≥ 60 years), selected by means of a probabilistic sample, participated of the study. The dependent variable was disability, defined as mild (some difficulty) or severe (total dependence) in performing at least one basic activity of daily living. Prevalence of disability was 16% (8% mild; 8% severe). Age and worse self-rated health were independently and positively associated with mild and severe disability. Self-reported hypertension and arthritis were associated with mild disability, while diabetes and stroke were associated with severe disability. Severe disability was independently and negatively associated with number of visits by friends in the previous 30 days. According to the results, chronic conditions associated with disability in the study population are preventable, and severely disabled elderly had less extra-family social support. The second research had as its objective to present the translation and cultural adaptation to the Brazilian reality of an instrument of functional measurement-the SMAF-elaborated for clinical use in aged populations, as well as to evaluate intra and inter-observer reliability of this version mong the elderly participants of the ninth segment of the Bambui cohort. The translation of the instrument, a reverse translation and its transcultural adaptation were performed by two bilingual translators and the result was analyzed by a group of specialists, including the authors of the instrument. Before the administration of the instrument, the team of Brazilian evaluators was trained by the Canadian researchers, as well as the interviewers. A pre-test was conducted with 10 aged individuals of the community with different functional levels. 89 aged individuals randomly selected participated of the study and were submitted to the SMAF (full test) conducted by four interviewers. The elderly were evaluated at home by the same interviewer (test-retest; n=46), one week apart, or by different interviewers (inter-rater; n=43), within a 24 hours interval. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and its 95% Confidence Interval (CI) together with the Cronbach’s alpha were used for statistical analysis. The global ICC was 0,94 (IC: 0,90 - 0,97) for the inter-rater reliability and 0,99 (IC: 0,98-0,99) for the test-retest. The internal consistency of the translated SMAF showed a standardized Cronbach's alpha of 0,95. This study showed that the instrument presented an excellent performance in all the considered dimensions when applied either by the same or by different evaluators. The Portuguese version of SMAF adds to Brazilian public health a valid and reliable instrument to assess disabilities in the elderly population." @default.
