- W2275503882 abstract "Follow-up studies have shown that the frequency of AIDS in homosexual men who received the vaccine for hepatitis B virus is similar to that in an unvaccinated group of homosexual men. Further reassurance about the absence of the risk of AIDS in vaccine recipients has been provided by Jacobson et al. (Oct 18 issue) who could not detect any trend toward the immunologic changes (low T4/T8 ratio) associated with AIDS in vaccine recipients followed for up to 3 years after vaccination. However these immunologic changes were not more prevalent in asymptomatic homosexuals or hemophiliacs who were positive for antibody to lymphadenopathy-associated virus/human T-cell lymphotropic virus III (LAV/HTLV-III) than in those who were negative. Vaccine prepared from an infected plasma pool may have the potential to transmit the virus without causing detectable immunologic changes. The authors very rightly conclude that direct evidence against any risk of AIDS in vaccine recipients could be provided by serologic studies of antibodies to LAV/HTLV-III. We would like to report our preliminary serologic studies that provide evidence against LAV/HTLV-III infection in recipients of hepatitis B vaccine. Serum samples were collected from 2 groups each consisting of 25 young adults vaccinated with either ayw (investigational lot 803-1/CF 734-1) or adw (investigational lot 801-2/C-F 732-2) vaccine prepared by Merck Sharp and Dohme as previously described. 18 children with beta-thalassemia who were vaccinated with a commercial lot of vaccine from the same manufacturer (NF 6890) were included in the study. Sequential serum samples collected before innoculation and up to 24 months afterward were examined for antibodies to LAV/HTLV-III by means of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. To define the specificity of binding positive samples were tested at the Institute Pasteur (Paris) with the Western blot technique as previously described. Antibodies to LAV/HTLV-III were not detected in any of the serial samples examined. Only lots of hepatitis B vaccine prepared by Merck Sharp and Dohme were used in these studies. However we believe that our studies like recent data showing that LAV/HTLV-III is susceptible to the inactivation process of the vaccine (Chermann C: personal communication) provide further evidence against the transmission of an agent for AIDS. Increased confidence in the safety of hepatitis B vaccine would allow the continuation of the national vaccination program in Greece. (full text)" @default.
