- W2275552789 abstract "Taking G. S. Morson’s Narrative and Freedom: The Shadows of Time(1994) as the main reference point, and drawing also on narratological criticismand Bakhtin’s concept of the chronotope, this paper sets out to analyse therelationship between temporality and narrative structure in Flannery O’Connor’sshort stories as well as the ethical implications of this interaction. Thus, the paperexplores O’Connor’s use of Poe’s notion of “unity of effect” and the narrativeclosure that this method involves. Similarly, it focuses on the ambiguous sense ofinevitability that many of O’Connor’s stories possess, which points to the devicesof “foreshadowing” and “backshadowing.” However, despite O’Connor’s distortedrealism “of distances” (Mystery 179), which in her own words, “lean[s] away fromtypical social patterns toward mystery and the unexpected”(40), the paperconcludes that O’Connor’s stories make use of the three “shadows of time” —foreshadowing, backshadowing and also sideshadowing— which in variouscombinations create powerful, unexpected endings that do not abolish the essentialopenness of time, but which, in their excess, force the reader’s attention to thestories’ ethical implications, and ultimately to the equivocal way in which theyconvey the religious commitment of this visionary writer." @default.
