- W2275797560 abstract "The field of organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) sensors has grown in the last years thanks to the advancements achieved by different groups. This research activity started in the late eighties, just a few years after the first organic thin-film transistor was proposed, when a study was published reporting on OTFTs source-drain current reaction upon exposure to different volatile molecules [1]. Although, the idea of using a bottom gate organic thin-film transistor as a sensing device was put forward, it was not clarified why a three terminal device structure was beneficial to the sensor performance. The idea of exploiting OTFTs as sensors potentially capable to outperform chemiresistors, was introduced by proposing OTFTs as multi-parameter sensors [2, 3]. These are semiconducting organic/polymer based sensors that offer the advantage of remarkable response repeatability, as demonstrated by 13 hours of operation and 420 subsequent exposures which exhibit responses with standard deviations within 2%. This property, highlighted in a recent news section of Analytical Chemistry [4], is related to the device baseline full recovery achieved (operating the OTFT at room temperature) by a strategic use of the gate bias. Selectivity is being pursued by choosing ad hoc chemically or biologically functionalized semiconducting polymer active layers [5, 6]. OTFTs implementation in microfluidics opens a wealth of opportunity for biosensing applications [7]. OTFT sensors technology can also take advantage of the rapid developments occurring in the field of organic electronics where OTFTs have already been implemented in complementary-metal-oxidesemiconductor (CMOS) circuits and in flexible plastic displays also as sensors [8]." @default.
