- W2275958066 abstract "The grammaticalization pathways of complementizers manifest both cross-linguistic and area-specific dimensions (Noonan 2007). The 'say'-verb pathway is a well-studied topic in South Asian (SA) languages (e.g. Lord 1993, Saxena 1995, Bashir 1996) while the 'demonstrative' pathway (e.g. English that demonstrative > complementizer that), hasn't yet been well studied. This paper is one of the first attempts to address the form-meaning interaction observed with an 'anaphoric', type-referring demonstrative adjective (corresponding to 'such') in two SA languages, i.e. as- in Marathi and ais- in Hindi. These adjectives show parallelism in having the following range of grammatical functions: (1) anaphora referring to an NP mentioned in the previous discourse; (2) relative clause marker, (3) direct quotation marker; and (4) complementizer:(Marathi)(1) [asaa hinsaka sinemaa] malaa aawaDat naahisuch.M violent cinema.M I.DAT like.PTCPL neg'I do not like such a violent movie.' (2) [[ek-hi mitr naahii] asaa maaNus] kuTha-ts naselone-even friend not which man where-EMPH not.FUT'There's probably no person who does not have a friend.'(3) [mi mumbai-laa dzaato] asa to mhaNaalaaI Mumbai-to go.FUT QUO he say.PAST'He said: I will go to Mumbai..'(4a) [tu mumbai-laa dzaawa] asa malaa waaTtayou Mumbai-to go.PTCPL COMP I.DAT feel.PRES'I feel that you should go to Mumbai.'(Hindi)(4b) [vo jaapaan jayegaa] aisaa mujhe lagtaa haihe Japan.to go.FUT COMP I.DAT feel be.PRES'I feel that he will to Japan.'The apparently enigmatic polyfunctionality of as-/ais- is motivated by the process whereby a demonstrative element is reinterpreted as a marker of complement clause belonging to the domain of speech (de dicto) (Frajzyngier 1991). The de dicto domain is opposed to the domain of reality (de re), a distinction many, if not all, languages make in at least two areas of language structure: (i) the system of reference and (ii) the marking of the embedded clause. Hindi and Marathi data present corroborating evidence for the general 'demonstrative' pathway in that 'anaphoric' demonstrative adjectives (Marathi as-, Hindi ais-) is grammaticalized into de dicto complementizers (4a, 4b) used to indicate inference (ibid: 227). There is also observed some interesting language-specific variation on the demonstrative pathway, such as the use of 'deictic' demonstrative ye ('this') in Hindi as the factive complementizer (5), where the 'inferential' complementizer ais- is not felicitous: (Hindi)(5) [vo jaapaan gayaa hai] {ye/*aisaa} main jaantaa huhe Japan.to went be.PRES this/such I.NOM know be.PRES'I know that he has gone to Japan.'The semantic contrast between ye and ais- in terms of factivity is iconically motivated (Haiman 1983). That is, the degree of directness involved in pointing to a referent, i.e. direct (spatio-physical) reference vs. indirect (text-based) reference, correlates with the psychological distance (commitment) toward the truth of the proposition.References:Frajzyngier, Zygmunt. 1991.
