- W2276295026 abstract "The review of the literature on contraceptive behavioramong adolescents suggested the following: (a) while asizable proportion of adolescent females have engaged insexual intercourse, many have not used effective means of contraception; (b) little has been known about the contraceptiveattitude among adolescents or about the relationshipbetween contraceptive knowledge and behavior; (c) there hasbeen some evidence for contraceptive attitude-behaviorconsistency; (d) perception of responsibility for contraceptionmay be related to contraceptive behavior; (e) relationshipsbetween demographic variables and contraceptive behaviorwere evident and worthy of further investigation; and (f) dataconcerning the relationships among contraceptive attitudes, knowledge, and behavior would suggest strategies for promotingcontraception among adolescents. This study investigated attitudes toward personal useof premarital contraception among sexually active adolescentmales and females. Contraceptive effectiveness behavior wasmeasured in relation to several factors: contraceptiveattitudes, knowledge about contraception, age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, frequency of intercourse, and percep-tion of whether primary responsibility for contraceptionbelongs to males or females, or whether it is shared jointly. In addition, an examination of the relationships betweendemographic variables, contraception behavior, attitudes, andknowledge was presented.Subjects were 101 males and 105 females from 14 to 19years of age who were drawn from a public high school nearCharleston, South Carolina. All students within the selectedclassrooms were asked to complete questionnaires assessingattitudes toward contraception, contraceptive knowledge, andsociodemographic and sex-related life history variables.Only unmarried, sexually active (i.e., those who had engagedin sexual intercourse) students were selected as subjects.Safeguards were taken to ensure complete confidentialityand anonymity of responses.Subjects were rated with regard to their effectivenessof contraception (high, moderate, or low). Ratings weredetermined according to the degree of risk for pregnancyassociated with the reported contraceptive behavior. Resultsof stepwise discriminant analyses revealed contraceptiveattitudes and knowledge were related to contraceptivebehavior. However, the most important variable overall interms of discriminating between contraceptive effectivenessgroups was contraceptive attitudes. Age, gender, race, frequency of intercourse, and years of sexual experiencealso contributed significantly to prediction of contraceptiveeffectiveness.Separate univariate analyses indicated the following:The high contraceptive effectiveness group scored higher ona test of contraceptive knowledge than the moderate effectivenessgroup. There was no difference found between scoresof high and low effectiveness groups. The low effectiveness group was more likely to perceiveresponsibility…" @default.
