A number of these proteins exist as precursor enzymes that are converted to active products during activation and are controlled by inactivators or inhibitors. The activation of the classical pathway is modulated by the presence of proteins in blood that function as inhibitors or inactivators. The observation that sheep erythrocytes sensitized with specific antibodies are lysed by the classical pathway of complement led to the development of convenient methods for the functional assessment of the proteins of this system. Rocket immunoelectrophoresis (RIE) is a well-suited procedure to measure the concentration of a particular complement component or control protein in a protein mixture or serum.
