- W2276550078 abstract "The distinction between method and user failure for natural family planning (NFP) methods is not always adequately delineated. Method failure is a pregnancy occurring when the rules for pregnancy avoidance are properly understood and faithfully followed. The reported method failure rate for the ovulation (Billings) method alone is 1.17%. User failure on the other hand is an unintended pregnancy that occurs when objectively fertile days are used for intercourse. User failure may occur when the couple honestly misunderstood the rules or when the couple took a chance or had lost the desire to avoid pregnancy without a deliberate choice to conceive. In comparing birth control methods it is not really helpful to compare methods whose only purpose isto avoid conception with methods of fertility acceptance. Fertility acceptance methods use only the physiological markers of the couples combined fertility to discern the fertility and infertility of given days of the cycle. The couple then chooses whether or not to engage in intercourse. Thus the method can be used to achieve pregnancy or to avoid it. NFP methods are psychologically different from methods that remove the procreative capacity from the act of intercourse. In a sense it is the difference between wanting only the relationship of the moment of union as opposed to the possible extension in time of the relationship in th form of a child. With NFP the possibility of pregnancy is always possible since the methods are at best 99% effective. Many persons are drawn to NFP out of a desire to allow the fully biological presence of their procreative powers to be present in any act of intercourse. Advvocating the use of barriers during fertile times mrely reduces the time of barrier use and is not NFP. Use effectiveness figures cannot be read to mean that couples fail to learn NFP methods or practice the methods inconsistently. Effectiveness should be examined in light of the complex personal decisions that are mde within the context of natural methods." @default.
