- W2276553651 abstract "In this paper, we present the latest results obtained at the CEA concerning the 3D modeling of fuel rods behavior during Reactivity Initiated Accidents. The developments are part of a cooperative work with AREVA and EDF. They are performed in the multi-dimensional fuel code ALCYONE [1] (PLEIADES platform). A model describing the water coolant flow and accounting for the different state of the fluid (nucleate boiling, critical heat flux, vapor film) has recently been incorporated to the fuel code ALCYONE. This model gives the evolution of the clad temperature axial profile along the fuel rod within the axisymetric 1D1/2 scheme of ALCYONE to initialize the local 3D computation. The precise description of the Pellet Cladding Mechanical Interaction (PCMI) during incidental or accidental loading conditions (stress-strain concentration in front of pellet ends and pellet cracks, clad ridges) relies on the 3D scheme of ALCYONE which models the behavior of a pellet fragment and of the overlying cladding. This 3D model has recently been extended to allow for the simulation of stacked pellet fragments in order to reproduce the ballooning of the cladding observed in some RIA tests performed in experimental reactors ( [2]). The 3D multi-pellet scheme can thus be used to study the impact of a local hot spot (where the critical heat flux is reached) and of a local gas overpressure (assuming that the gas pressure is not uniform in the fuel rod) on the deformation of the cladding.
