- W227672412 abstract "A Brief Survey of Some Typical Uses of the CHI+NP Expressions in Chinese The CHI+NP ([TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII.] +NP) expression is not simply a verb-object construction which usually entails some syntactic constraint of the verb over the object, as in SHI FAN ([TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII.], eat cooked rice). In expressions like CHI FUMU([TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII.], eat parents), the verb-object constraint does not exist so we have to consider an extended meaning of CHI (such as 'depend on') to justify the expression. In other words, while CHI FAN ([TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII.], eat cooked rice) is semantically normal, CHI FUMU ([TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII.], eat parents) appears to be semantically abnormal because in such expressions the semantic constraint of the verb over the following NP is absent and the nuclear meaning of CHI is no long used. In contemporary Chinese, CHI is an omnipotent polysemous verb and its semantic content varies with different NPs in the CHI+NP combination. The plethora of meanings of CHI in Chinese CHI+NP expressions can be conspicuously set off by the limited semantic variety of the counterpart verb 'eat' in the English 'eat+NP' construction. The core meaning of both CHI and 'eat' is so meanings other than the core meaning are semantic extensions radiating from the core meaning thru metaphorization. For instance, it is the root metaphor 'CHI IS DEPENDINGUPON' (Yang Chunsheng, 2004; Li Ruize, 2007; Wang Yingxue, 2007) that makes the expression CHI FUMU (eat parents) possible. Although Chinese and English do display various sense extensions of CHI or 'eat' respectively, the extension range of 'eat' in English is much narrower than that of CHI in Chinese. Yang Chunsheng (2004) categorized the extended (ET) senses of 'eat' into only 4 ET sense types. (ET means 'extended meaning'). Among the 4 types, 3 also occur in Chinese marked by C. The mark $ means 'this sense is unique in English. English metaphorical extensions of EATING: (C)I. EATING IS CONSUMING: e.g. Covering news in the fields eats money. (C)II. EATING IS CORRODING: e.g. Waves ate away the beach. (C)III. EATING IS ABSORBING: e.g. You can eat your loss and switch the remaining money to other investment portfolios. ($)IV. EATING IS ANNOYING: e.g. What's eating him? In contrast, the ET meaning range the Chinese verb CHI is a much wider which could be briefly and typically subcategorized into the following subtypes. ET5-7 senses also occur in English marked by E. The asterisk * put before ET1-4 senses means 'they are unique in Chinese'. * ET1 to eat where eatable things are sold or provided (e.g. CHI SHITANG, eat dining-hall) * ET2 to depend upon someone or something to live (e.g. CHI FUMU,eat parents) * ET3 to annihilate or kill (e.g. CHI DIAO DIREN YIGE TUAN, eat a regiment of the enemy) * ET4 to remove the chess piece of the opponent at chess games (near to B3) (e.g. CHU JUDeat the JU piece at a Chinese Chess game) (E)ET5 to consume (e.g. ZHE CHE CHI YOU, this car eats gas) (E)ET6 to absorb liquid (e.g. ZHE ZHI CHI MOSHUI, this paper eats ink) (E)ET7 to suffer (e.g. CHI KUTOU, eat pain or bitterness) All the 7 ET senses listed above are recorded in The Dictionary of Modern Chinese(2002) but they are just the most representative among more senses of the verb. Dong Weiguang (1995) believed that all the semantic extensions of CHI are related to each other in the manner of the following relational chain: . …" @default.
