- W2277013128 abstract "Repeated fertilization failures after ICSI are rarely encountered and therefore treated with artificial oocyte activation with calcium ionophore, strontium or electrostimulation to achieve fertilization after ICSI. Although successful pregnancies and live birth are achieved, follow-up of the babies from ART with oocyte activation is not well studied. In the present study, the babies born with oocyte activation with calcium ionophore treatment at our facility was followed to evaluate the safety of this treatment. Follow-up study of 13 babies (11 cases of pregnancy) born between April 2004 and January 2014 from ART with calcium ionophore for their poor fertilization were performed. Sex, length, weight, gestational-age and congenital abnormalities at birth were recorded. Moreover, height and weight were compared to 2010 data of national growth survey on preschool children provided by Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. Length at birth of male and female were 47.24±1.84cm and 48.0±3.54cm, respectively. Birth weight of male and female were 2709±401g and 3068±81g, respectively. Gestational-age of male and female were 268±10 days and 274±0 days, respectively. Data of birth length and height of all babies except one male were plotted between the 97th and 3rd percentile curves of the national growth survey. Percentage (84.6%; 11/13) of male babies born tended to be higher (P=0.06) than female (15.6%; 2/13). There was one baby of 21 trisomy confirmed. The present study demonstrates that oocyte activation with calcium ionophore does not influence birth length, weight and gestational-age. Investigation of sex showed higher rate of male obtained with calcium ionophore than female though it was not statistically significant. This might be due to small population of invested group. There were no differences in physical growth confirmed in comparison with national growth survey. However, the entire safety of calcium ionophore could not be concluded from the present study due to the small number of samples. Further investigation is warranted to determine the influence of calcium ionophore on the prognosis of babies including congenital abnormalities and sex ratio differences." @default.
