- W2277014432 abstract "Census and survey data permit estimation of increases in female non-domestic employment in Mexico between 1970 and 1990. Surveys usually provide higher estimates of female participation rates than do censuses. Surveys are better at capturing information on the part time or sporadic work engaged in by many women. Such work is frequently overlooked as economic activity even by the persons performing it. The different sources suggest that activity rates for women 12 and over increased from 17.6% in 1970 to approximately 30% in the late 1980s. The 1990 census, however, indicated an activity rate of 19.6%, representing a serious underestimation of female employment and probably also the effects of the recent economic recession. Nevertheless, steady increases in activity rates for women ages 20-24 and especially 25-34 to levels exceeding 40%, according to the surveys of the late 1980s, indicate that more women are continuing to work after marriage and childbirth. Male activity rates from 1970 to 1990 showed much less variation, suggesting that male employment is less sensitive to short and medium term economic fluctuations and less vulnerable to the data gathering procedures utilized. The 1990 census showed a lower male activity rate than did any of the other sources since 1970, perhaps because of the difficulty of measuring the most precarious types of employment." @default.
