- W2277429934 abstract "This qualitative study was exploratory and analyzed anemerging form of schooling - charter schools - withinthe context of urban Catholic elementary education in America.Specifically, it examined the perceptions of Catholic schoolsuperintendents related to this form of schooling. The studyinvestigated if a common understanding of religious charter schoolswas salient among Catholic school superintendents. In addition, itanalyzed the perceptions of Catholic school superintendents relatedto the benefits and challenges to this type of school in a Catholiccontext. The research design was a basic qualitative researchstudy. The data collection methods used were the distribution of asemi-structured questionnaire and the conducting of follow-upopen-ended interviews. A descriptive contemporary historicalanalysis of the relevant literature on religious charter schoolswas a component of the research design and influenced thedevelopment of the semi-structured questionnaire and open-endedinterview protocol. The synthesis of the literature on religiouscharter schools is the first of its kind in a Catholic schoolcontext. The findings of this study indicate that while thereligious charter school terminology is problematic in a Catholiccontext, the concept of such schools are perceived to bepotentially beneficial, but challenging to implement in practice.The clear benefit to religious charter schools in a Catholiccontext is perceived as financial. This perception was shared bythe superintendents against the backdrop of the current closingcrisis faced by many urban Catholic elementary schools in theUnited States. The most likely beneficial scenario that emergedfrom this study is the leasing of former Catholic school facilitiesto charter schools and subsequently developing wraparoundreligious education programs. Developing positive relationshipswith charter schools may result in additional income for strugglingurban parishes as well as opening new doors for religious educationprogramming and outreach to the urban poor. Challenges to religiouscharter schools in a Catholic context include church and statecomplications related to public funding, religious identity issues,legal concerns and the fact that they are not Catholicschools." @default.
