- W2277528131 abstract "The importance of calcium in the activation of cellular processes has been comprehensively documented (e.g. Campbell 1983), but it is only in the case of a very few processes that the precise location of the calcium-sensitive effector has been identified. Two examples stand out. In skeletal muscle it is known beyond doubt that calcium interacts with troponin C, a satellite protein of the actomyosin, and through the consequent activation of myosin ATPase renders the contractile system calcium dependent. In the liver and muscle cascades controlling glycogenolysis, calcium is known to interact with calmodulin, a subunit of Phosphorylase kinase (Cohen et al. 1978). Calmodulin and troponin C are closely related, and widely distributed among eukaryotic cells, and can therefore be considered to be reasonable candidates for the sites of calcium action in cellular processes, though there are many others, to be sure (Table 1). Ca2+ activation encompasses the whole of animal cell biology. Thus, in addition to the two processes already mentioned, it is known that calcium is involved in initiating the change from G0 to G1 and through to S phase in lymphocytes (Nisbet-Brown et al. 1985) (but possibly not in fibroblasts; McNeil et al. 1985; Rozengurt 1985), in the early stages of egg activation (in addition to the cortical granule secretory reactions), in the control of the solute permeability of gap junctions (Loewenstein 1979) and the K+ (Lew and Fermera 1978) and Na+ (Blaustein 1974) permeability of plasma membranes." @default.
