- W2277584359 abstract "Diseases of the anterior pituitary gland are discussed under conditions where there is excessive hormone secretion and where there is a hormone deficiency. Usually when there is involvement of the pituitary gland this is secondary to a hypothalamic abnormality in the regulation of ACTH secretion. Cushings syndrome arises from abnormally high production of hormone from the anterior part of the pituitary gland but is a rare condition. The antidiuretic hormone may be excreted in excessive amounts from the posterior part of the pituitary gland. Deficiency of the pituitary hormones may arise from loss of all the pituitary gland. Acromegaly is due to hypersection of growth hormone. X-ray study of bony growth is characteristic in acromegaly. Headaches and a visual field defect may arise from increased size of the pituitary. Growth hormone levels in the blood are elevated. Other situations including stress and fear can also lead to a high growth hormone level but these levels can be reduced by food or glucose while those in persons with acromegaly cannot. When the acromegalic disorder is no longer active growth hormone levels become normal. Surgical treatment is via craniotomy or through the nose. X-ray or radium therapy has also been used. The proton beam is a new method available in only a few centers in the U.S. Bromocriptine therapy has been shown to reduce growth hormone secretion in some patients. Hyperprolactinemia may cause galactorrhea. The relationship between prolactin and the secretion of gonadotropins is controversial but bromocriptine therapy for hyperprolactinemia has been reported to restore reproductive function." @default.
