- W2277886737 abstract "A fter than a quarter century of independence, it is evident that both the consolidation of our young nation-states and the effective cultural development of the new African society (including the growth of a thriving modern African literature) are bound to remain mere illusions as long as we continue the futile effort of trying to make the foreign languages of our former colonial masters the national languages of our African countries. Our writers and intellectuals are fast awakening to this crucial reality of our society; as a result, and of them are advocating the use of African languages by African writers. Some are already writing in these languages and discovering in them the vehicle of their true creativity. However, African writers and intellectuals have, in general, not yet realized that, given our linguistic fragmentation, writing in African languages alone will remain of limited and mostly academic interest unless it is part of a larger program to develop African languages of nation-wide application (i.e., African national languages). Given the social and economic reality of our countries, only national languages have the potential to become fully developed modern African languages: African languages that we will use not only at the tribal level and put aside when it comes to more elevated matters, but languages in which we speak, write, read, think, conduct the affairs of our countries, and educate our children and our adults-at all levels, including the university. Only such languages are capable of being languages of African economic, political, and cultural development. Only such languages are capable of fostering African regional and continental cooperation and unity. And, equally important, only such languages will enable us to retain our African identity in" @default.
