- W2278766462 abstract "ORTHOPEDICS | www.orthobluejournal.com Fifth metatarsal fractures are common orthopedic injuries, yet they have various fracture presentations and patterns requiring different treatments. Therefore, these injuries have different prognoses and can be challenging to treat. However, interpretation of the literature to help guide treatment is even more challenging due in part to the terminology, definitions, and classifications. Anatomically, fractures at the base of the adult fifth metatarsal occur in the proximal one third of the bone and are usually divided into two main groups: avulsion tuberosity fractures and shaft fractures within 1.5 cm of the tuberosity. The latter group is sometimes divided between fractures of the metaphyseal/diaphyseal junction, and those of the proximal diaphysis to give a total of three main groups. These fracture groups each have different natural histories and demand different treatment approaches. Unfortunately, it is difficult to draw insight from the literature due to varying classifications and definitions. The definition of the Jones fracture varies among different studies, particularly in large patient series in which conclusive treatment recommendations are made. Torg defines the Jones fracture as those fractures occurring in the proximal part of the diaphysis distal to the tuberosity.1 Others refer to the Jones fracture as an acute fracture of the metaphyseal/diaphyseal junction.2-4 It is ■Case Report" @default.
