- W2278833250 abstract "Issue addressed: Statewide tobacco control programs that began in Australia and are now common in the United States are one of the most important health promotion innovations over the past two decades. This paper reviews the evolution of these programs and discusses the current state-of-the art in terms of program goals. Discussion: Tobacco control programs have evolved since the late 1960s and Australia is recognised as having contributed considerably to their development. Many tobacco control programs are now well funded (compared to other health promotion programs) by cigarette taxes. They typically involve mass media campaigns, community organisations, school programs, and action and service by health professionals. These programs have two basic goals: to protect the health of non-smokers and to reduce smoking prevalence. They have been very successful in the first goal, and in motivating and helping adult smokers to quit. Their biggest challenge is to overcome the effectiveness of the tobacco industry in encouraging adolescents to smoke. So what? Tobacco use is the most preventible cause of disease in developed countries. Statewide tobacco control programs have been demonstrated to be the most effective way to combat tobacco use, although none of the strategies used are considered optimal. Improving strategies used in these programs is a major health promotion challenge. (author abstract)" @default.
