- W2279063480 abstract "Crowdfunding has become a major consideration for individuals looking to fund their ideas, endeavors, and businesses. This phenomenon raises interesting questions for management scholars such as what theories help to explain the success of such campaigns and the consequences of these campaigns. In this paper, we address these questions. With regard to campaign success, we argue that there are mixed motives associated with contributing to these campaigns, and theoretical dynamics vary according to these different motives. With regard to consequences of campaigns, we note that there are two fundamental differences associated with using crowdfunding vs. more traditional means of funding early stage ideas and/or ventures – diffused (vs. concentrated) engagement of funders and a product (vs. a person/company) focus which requires fundees to lock-in to a specific set of product attributes. Drawing on theory related to capabilities and cognitions in contexts of uncertainty and entrepreneurial processes, we identify conditions under which crowdfunding is likely to be more and less advantageous based on these two dimensions. In summary, we provide a model that explains important sources of heterogeneity (i.e., motives) and homogeneity (i.e., diffused engagement and product lock-in) within the crowdfunding phenomenon that guide theory application and development in our field." @default.
