- W227922093 abstract "ABSTRACT.The mainstay of the paper is formed by an analysis of the university's penetration by society, inter-relationships between knowledge and policy in neoliberal states, the forms of knowledge, learning and creative economies, and the intimate connection between government and knowledge within liberalism. In the present paper, I focus on the rise of the knowledge society and information economy, the dramatic dematerialization of the global economy, the global economic reorganization made possible by new data storage, analysis and sharing technologies, and the global effects of risk-generating growth and development. Keywords: knowledge society, information, global economy, education1. IntroductionThis study is grounded in the considerable body of scholarship examining the powerful dynamics operating within the knowledge society, the development of mass higher education systems, the co-evolution of university and society, and the authorization of social experience by the knowledge system. Related topics I will explore include the simultaneously integrative and fragmenting dynamics of globalization, the dynamics of complexly networked global systems of interdependence and interpenetration, the HE crises of quality and alignment, and the operational dynamics of the global economy. The purpose of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of the nexus between the internationalization of higher education, the interdependence of EGM universities through transnational activities, the changing academic landscape, the intensity of knowledge production, and links between entrepreneurial activity in universities and the knowledge economy.2. The Rise of the Knowledge Society and Information EconomyTrani and Holsworth observe that universities that know how to build the right kind of partnerships and collaborations can develop innovative instructional programs and cutting-edge research agendas. Higher education is in the midst of a transformation that is redefining the relationship of colleges and universities to the broader community, being a vital player in the promotion of economic progress. Higher education institutions have shown increasing flexibility in determining how they will recruit top leaders. Universities seek to redefine themselves in ways that will enable them to become significant actors in the knowledge-based economy, are more engaged and more entrepreneurial than ever before, can help to foster broad societal development initiatives, will dedicate considerable resources to instruction in the sciences and other technologically driven areas, can develop research parks that can link academic research to entrepreneurship, are linchpins for downtown redevelopment in many urban areas, may assist scientifically driven economic development, and have the capacity to be neutral facilitators of dialogue across opposition lines. Colleges and universities have become indispensable actors in the social and economic development of modem society, and are central participants in responding to many of the most pressing challenges facing communities and regions, being major players in the formulation of economic development strategies (colleges and universities occupy a crucial and somewhat unique role in the overall policy process). It also follows that the talent at colleges and universities tends to be a factor driving economic innovation. Trani and Holsworth insist that the relationship of universities to the global knowledge economy is transcending nation-specific concerns. Government policies with a supportive academic climate can enable nations to make significant progress within the global economic structure. There is an important external role that may be of tremendous financial assistance to universities. Governments and nonprofits find new ways of enlisting the university in addressing societal challenges. The social responsibility of urban universities is an integral feature of university identity. …" @default.
