- W2279336228 abstract "As I have shown in the preceding chapters, it is certain that there are many points of resemblance between Maugham and Maupassant in their scope, style and technique, subject matter. Perhaps the most significant resemblance between the two authors is Maugham's adherence to the form of the short story established by Maupassant, who considered that a short story writer's primary aim should be to tell a story. The narrative element is always of chief interest. In this respect he differed from the Russian, Chekov, who has acquired a number of followers in the 20th century. But Maugham shares Maupassant's view of this matter, and sustains the reader's interest by the quality of his narrative rather than by the introduction of mood or atmosphere. Although Maupassant's subjectivity is not precisely that of Maugham, they are alike in that each sees a thing most clearly from his own point of view. It is true that the literary theories of the two writers are simple and sound. Regarding style, both consider clearness and simplicity as important attributes, and precision, or the art of saying exactly what one means, is equally essential. Both have expressed an aversion to rhetoric, while neither can be identified with any school or group of writers. They are realistic in the selections of their material. but they do not consider it sufficient for the writer to make a literal transcript of life. Probability is the object at which the realistic writer of fiction should aim, and this involves a careful selection of material. Moreover, their views on these matters are so nearly alike that Maupassant s influence seems unquestionable. In conclusion I can say that Maupassant principally influenced Maugham in the composition of his short stories; in his insistence upon form and narrative, clarity of style, and precision of language; and in his constant effort to make his stories probable, convincing interpretations of real life." @default.
