- W2279456211 abstract "The role of Platelet Factor 3 (PF3) in hypercoagulable states is discussed. Conditions such as hyperlipemia pregnancy oral contraceptive therapy and traumatisms which are associated with an increase in the incidence of venous and/or arterial thrombosis (hypercoagulable states) are characteized by an in vitro hypercoagulability as detected by the recalcification plasma clotting time (PCT). Such hypercoagulability was not observed in the absence of platelets (cephalin clotting time); in contrast the hypercoagulability observed with the PCT could be reproduced by platelets alone that were washed and resuspended in a standard platelet-poor plasma. In hyperlipemia the activity of the whole platelets was correlated with that of the total lipid extract of the platelets or of certain of their phospholipid fractions therefore the test utilized to detect PF3 activity was specific and the hypercoagulability observed was entirely due to PF3. PCT was closely correlated with the activity of PF3 indicating that the coagulation of the whole blood or of the platelet-rich plasma was mostly dependent upon the activity of PF3. These findings also suggest that PF3 is the limiting factor of coagulation under normal conditions and that hypercoagulability in the absence of activated plasmatic clotting factors should result mostly from an increase in PF3 activity." @default.
