- W2279484476 abstract "This article introduces the methodological principle ofsymmetry as developed in science and technology studies (STS).However simple in its formulation, this principle isunexpectedly complex in practice and has farreachingconsequences. Adherence to the principle of symmetry in thestudy of religion(s) is one promising avenue through whichpractical solutions to many theoretical and methodologicalproblems may be formulated in response to postmodern andpostcolonial critique of the study of religion(s) as well as ofthe modern scientific practice in general. The aim of thisarticle is to demonstrate the promises of the symmetricalapproach, the ways of its practical enactment, thecomplications of this enactment, and some solutions for thesecomplications. The arguments and demonstrations provided hereshow that: (1) demarcating the research field of the study ofreligion(s) through the concept “religion” in itself createsasymmetries which contradict objective empirical andtheoretical study; (2) the practical enactment of the principledemands taking important ethical and political decisions inorder to prepare the practical conditions for research andanalysis; (3) making these decisions and maintaining theseconditions is necessary in order to achieve theoreticalobjectivity and build good and transparent theories; and (4)being faithful to these decisions during the process of dataanalysis is extremely complicated and can only be more or lesssuccessfully achieved on the basis of (a) high degree ofethical commitments towards the participants which empower thempolitically in relation to the researcher and the researchitself, and (b) by analysing the process of data collection andanalysis in exactly the same way (i.e. symmetrically) as theactivities of all other actors engaged in the research. In thissense modernist ideas concerning moral and politicaldisengagement as the condition for neutrality, objectivity andtruth are reversed." @default.
