The interjacent limits of the three major territorial divisions of the Gold Coast are here designated as internal colonial boundaries. For, although the Gold Coast was one fiscal and administrative unit, it was not until 1946 and 1951, respectively, that Ashanti and the Northern Territories were politically united with the Gold Coast Colony and the two northern dependencies were represented in the legislature at Accra. Until then the governor administered the two territories by proclamation while the Legislative Council made laws for the Gold Coast Colony.1 The major issues of relating the internal colonial boundaries of the Gold Coast to the physical and cultural configuration of the country were raised between 1900 and 1906 and attempts were made to resolve them.2 The boundaries which became operative on 1 January 1907 are shown in Figure 1. While the boundary between the Gold Coast Colony and Ashanti coincided with considerable sections of the Pra, Ofin, and other rivers, that between the latter administration and the Northern Territories generally followed the Black Volta, Chukow, and Pru rivers.
