- W2280456062 abstract "When Leopold Bloom crawls into bed beside Molly, he is neither maternal father nor womanly man: he is child. He is ‘the childman weary, the manchild in the womb’.1 He rests by Molly who is ‘in the attitude of Gea-Tellus’,2 a description which, in light of ‘Penelope’, is surely to be read ironically. For, as Attridge perceptively argues, Molly’s interior monologue reveals little in the way of maternal instinct, and her actions to ensure that she does not conceive with Blazes Boylan belie the rubric ‘Gea- Tellus’.3 Sensual, earthy woman – yes; earth-mother – almost certainly not. The metaphorical womb to which the weary Bloom retreats is that of rest, sleep. It does not belong to Molly. In ‘Penelope’, Molly’swomb sheds its ‘childbed’, making it inhospitable to any child, and signalling that no child has been conceived by her in the course of the day.4 This is no phallic mother lauded by feminist critics. The gap between Gea-Tellus and Molly widens throughout ‘Penelope’ to the point where Gea-Tellus is obliterated effectively by Molly’s soliloquy. The symbol of maternity, in the course of a woman’s unbridled thoughts, is emptied of meaning and divested of much of its potency. Molly resists the maternal icon – good mother, earth mother, virginal mother – and asserts her own (sexual) space in opposition to that space the patriarchal cultural tradition would have her occupy. And it is this resistance of the maternal icon and the reconstitution of maternal spaces – inherent to ‘Penelope’ – that defines the representation of the mother-figure within Ulysses." @default.
