- W2280478806 abstract "Open Marxism and neo-Gramscian perspectives clearly share a whole range of common historical materialist assumptions, concerns and objectives. Both reject the positivist separation of subject and object and the distinction between normative enquiry and empirical scientific research in the search for causal relationships. Rather, they understand themselves as a critical theory, which questions current world order and power relationships in an effort to contribute to a positive transformation of capitalism. Therefore, they both also reject any ahistoric notion separating the political and the economic, the state and market, the domestic and the international. Instead, they take the social relations of production as a starting-point of enquiry and acknowledge that as a result of capitalism being organized around private property and wage labour, these apparent dichotomies are simply different expressions, different forms, of the same configuration of social relations. For example, we would more than share Werner Bonefeld’s sentiment that ‘the understanding … of the global relations of capital can not go forward through the rationalisation of the strategic calculations of particular transnational banks and multinational companies. It has to go forward through an examination of the relations of exploitation and that is through an understanding of the dependence of capital on labour’ (this volume, Chapter 4, 45–68). Such commonalities make it possible to appreciate the historicity of capitalism, including also the possibility of change beyond the capitalist social relations of production (see Chapter 1)." @default.
