- W2281204080 abstract "Spaced and bunch plantings of F2 plants of a cross between two japonica rice varieties, Choung-Chin-Chiu and Chianung 242, together with their space-planted parents, were arranged in randomized complete blocks to evaluate genetic and environmental variability of the segregating F2 populations. Data recorded on each plant were heading date, plant height, number of panicles per plant, number of grains per panicle, length of panicle, weight of panicle, weight of 100 grains, and grain yield per plant. Heritability values for each character and correlation coefficients between characters were calculated. Path-coefficient analysis was made to show the interrelationships of components of yield with grain yield per plant. Bunch planting greatly reduced the average values of number of panicles and grain yield per plant, indicating that these characters were most easily affected by close spacing. The remaining characters studied were found to be less affected by the environmental variation. Means of weight of 100 grains in the two planting methods remained almost the same. Heritability values for panicle length, weight of panicle, plant height, and heading date were higher in bunch planting than in the spaced one, while weight of 100 grains showed higher heritability value in spaced planting. The heritability estimates for the number of panicles and grain yield per plant were inconsistent in both plantings. Negative heritability estimates of these characters in bunch planting were due partly to the large environmental variance and partly to the unusually small phenotypic variance associated with these two characters. Phenotypic correlations in bunch planting were found to be generally higher than those in spaced planting. Under each planting, genotypic correlations were mostly larger than phenotypic correlations. Positive associations involving number of grains per panicle with panicle length, plant height, and heading date were, in general, larger in bunch planting than those in the spaced one. Grain yield per plant was found to b highly correlated with number of grains per panicle in bunch planting, while in spaced planting, grain yield per plant was more closely associated with number of panicles. From the examination of direct effects of components of yield on grain yield per plant, it was shown that the number of grains per panicle was the most important character influencing grain yield per plant in bunch planting, while in spaced planting, it was primarily the number of panicles that determined the grain yield per plant. Considering the magnitude of heritability and association of characters, it seems reasonable to conclude that bunch planting provides a more favorable environment for segregating F2 populations in which effective individual plant selection could be made." @default.
