• W228235787 abstract "Acidification of slurry is an effective method to reduce ammonia emission from animal manure. However, high sulphur concentration of acidified manure may make this material unsuitable as a sole substrate in anaerobic digestion (AD). Therefore this study investigates the utilization of solid fractions from solid-liquid separation of acidified manure (SFAM), which contain most of the methane potential but only a minor part of the sulphur. The result of batch experiments showed that the AD process was inhibited when whole and the liquid fraction of sow and fattening pig acidified manure were digested, but SFAM showed no inhibition. There was no significant effect on the ultimate methane yield (Bo) of sow SFAM when the screen size of screw press solid-liquid manure separation (SPMS) was varied. SFAM from SPMS is higher in dry matter content compared to SFAM from drum solid-liquid manure separation (DSMS), hence this technology not only can reduce transport costs of SFAM but also can produce more methane per unit volume of SFAP. Bo of SFAM from fattening pig manure with DSMS technique is significantly higher than that of SFAM from sow with SPMS method. In continuous feeding of AD, a digester treating 30% dairy cattle manure (DCM) and 70% SFAM of acidified DCM had satisfactory performance with stable methane production, low volatile fatty acid concentration and a 47.92% higher methane yield in terms of digester volume compared to control.
