- W2282395299 abstract "In order to identify the bacteria responsible for development of porosity (similar to retting) in pine logs under anaerobic conditions of pond storage in the western United States, a pond survey and experimental study were performed. Porosity was caused by the removal of ray cell contents and occasional destruction of thin-walled ray parenchyma cells. Culturing of samples from 25 lumber mills (78 wood samples) and microscopic examination of the expressed sap showed the vibrio in 84% and the aerobacilli in 96% of the excessively porous wood. Bacillus polymyxa comprised the main strains identified. No log storage method is entirely reliable in preventing sapwood deterioration; cold, flowing water offers some protection from degradation. A time study was done on the invasion. The morphology of the aerobacilli and vibrio was studied by light microscopy; reactions in various cultural media provided additional physiological characteristics. Tests were also made using slash pine and maple holocellulose, C.P. grade cellobiose, citrus pectin, xylan, and aspen hemicellulose. The sulfate-reducing vibrio (possibly Desulfovibrio desulfuricans) is an incidental biological micro-organism not responsible for porosity development; its growth is likely stimulated by metabolites of B. polymyxa during hydrolysis of pectic compounds, starch and possibly hemicellulose and cellulose." @default.
