- W2282798772 abstract "For many applications, hydrogen is the most used fuel in a direct oxidation fuel cell, but difficulties of storage and large-scale distribution are still strong limitations for the development of such fuel cells [1, 2]. In this context other fuels, such as alcohols, which are liquid under ambient temperature and pressure, are more convenient due to the easiness of their handling and distribution. Methanol and ethanol have been thoroughly studied since 3 decades. Methanol, which only contains one carbon atom, leads to power densities close to 180–200 mW cm at 90°C [3-6], which makes it a good alternative to hydrogen in direct oxidation fuel cells in terms of electrical performance, particularly for portable applications. However, because of its high toxicity and its actually limited performances, its development seems to be limited for wide applications. Other alcohols, particularly those derived from biomass, are more convenient for large-scale applications. The electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol has been thoroughly investigated [7-8], because it is the simplest alcohol after methanol, with a weaker toxicity. But its oxidation rate is limited due to the difficulty to break the C-C bond under electrochemical conditions. Other alternative liquid fuels for a direct oxidation fuel cell can be ethers or poly-ethers, particularly those derived from methane (DMM, TMM, etc.). They can be produced at a low cost from natural gas and they have a lower toxicity, compared to methanol. Moreover they do not contain a C-C bond (conversely to ethanol) so that their electro-oxidation is easier, and they have a high energy density (≈ 7 kWhr/kg). In the case of dimethoxymethane (DMM) and trimethoxymethane (TMM) [9-11], their complete oxidation to carbon dioxide involves 16 and 20 electrons, respectively, which makes the oxidation mechanism rather complex [10]:" @default.
