- W228292868 abstract "The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a milestone target for reuse of textiles in the Swedish environmental objectives system with the objective of reducing environmental impacts from textiles. According to the proposed target, 40 percent of the textiles put on the market shall be reused by 2020.On behalf of the Swedish EPA the Swedish Environmental Emissions Data (SMED) has calculated the second hand market for textiles as well as the proportion of second hand products compared to the total consumption of new textiles in Sweden. The developed method can be used to follow up the proposed milestone target. The results of the calculations are summarised in the following table. In total 23 400 tonnes of second hand textiles were reused in 2011 and in 2013 respectively. Behind this constant figure e.g. the following trends can be identified: Charitable organisations strengthened their dominating role on the second hand market. In 2013 charitable organisations represented 87 percent of the textiles channelized to reuse. This represents an increase by 5 percent compared to 2011. The proportion of textiles that are reused in Sweden increased by 16 percent from 2011 to 2013. In 2011 7 400 tonnes (32 percent) of the second hand textiles were reused in Sweden. The corresponding figure for 2013 was 8 600 tonnes (37 percent). The proportion of textiles channelized to reuse via actors engaged in internet trade increased by 33 percent from 2011 to 2013. In 2013 internet trade represented 23 percent (2 000 tonnes) of the reused textiles in Sweden. The total per capita reuse of textiles decreased from 2.5 kg in 2011 to 2.4 kg in 2013 due to the population growth. However, theamount of second hand textiles reused in Sweden increased from 0.8 kg per person in 2011 to 0.9 kg per person in 2013.The proportion of second hand products compared to the total consumption of new textiles in Sweden was 18 percent in 2011 and 19 percent in 2013. The amount of reused textiles remained constant. Hence, the increase in the proportion of second hand products compared to the total consumption of new textiles is the result of decreased consumption of new textiles. 121 000 tonnes (12.5 kg/capita) of new textiles were consumed in 2013. The corresponding figure for 2011 is 133 000 tonnes (14.0 kg/capita). In absolute terms (regardless of the increase in population) this corresponds to a decrease by 9 percent. With respect to the per capita consumption, the decrease corresponds to 12 percent. The amounts of consumed new textiles and reused second hand textiles per capita 2013 are illustrated in the following figure.Textilesconsidered in the calculations of the second hand market are clothes and household textiles in the form of clothes, towels, curtains, sheets, blankets, working clothes and rags. The calculated amounts of reused second hand textiles comprised textile flows channelized to reuse via charitable organisations, actors engaged in internet trade and other companies regardless of if the reuse took place in Sweden or abroad. The total consumption of new textiles in Sweden was calculated as the net input flow of textiles, i.e. the sum of import and domestic production minus export. Data regarding reused textiles were mainly collected via telephone interviews with charitable organisations and companies. Data regarding consumption of new textiles was extracted from Statistics Sweden’s (SCB’s) statistic regarding foreign trade (exports and imports) and production of commodities and industrial services (domestic production)." @default.
